Who We Are

A foundational piece of BKBQ’s initiative is focused on building today’s youth for a better tomorrow. We understand the importance of investing in our youth and we are aware of the great benefits that come with this responsibility. Our objective is to keep our youth actively engaged while learning new skills, building upon a desire and, eventually figuring out their passions through various educational and artistic pathways. Education and awareness are an essential component of our program.

CURRICULUM

Week 1

Growth Mindset & Goal SettingMaking The Vision Plain (Vision Boards)

Growth mindset and goal setting helps to increase self-confidence and build a great work ethic for success. It gives purpose and a reason to stay motivated. Working towards a goal (many goals) will teach students how to celebrate success after hard work and persevere even when the goal is still out of reach.

Week 2

Self Love & Positive / Self Talk Self-awareness “Who Am I?”

To have self love is an important trait because only through loving ourselves can we love others and bring positive changes into others lives. Through practicing positive self-talk students will Reduce stress and anxiety, Increase happiness, Encourage healthy habits, Promote self-confidence and Decrease negativity and psychological symptoms.

Week 3

Self Confidence / Body Image, Self-Esteem & Self-Care

This lesson will teach students about the importance of being Self-Confidence. Self-confidence is an attitude about your skills and abilities. When you are confident you are able to accept and trust yourself and have a sense of control in your life. Students will learn how to become aware and more confident in their strengths and weaknesses. They will be able to set realistic goals, communicate well and be able to handle criticisms of all kinds.

This lesson will teach students about the importance of having confidence in their body image, self esteem and how to properly self care.

Week 4

Leadership & Overcoming Adversity/Trust & Team Building

Learning about leadership and overcoming adversity equips students with valuable skills and qualities necessary for success in various aspects of their lives. By developing various leadership skills, students will develop self-confidence, effective communication skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. Students will also learn about overcoming adversity which will teach them about resilience, perseverance, and the importance of a growth mindset.

Trust and Team building are essential skills for students to cultivate as they prepare for the challenges of the future. Learning to trust others and work effectively in teams fosters collaborations, communication, and empathy. These skills are not only valuable in academic settings but also in professional environments and everyday life.

Week 5

Vulnerability/Black History

Vulnerability is an important concept for students to learn about as it enables personal growth, connection and resilience. By embracing vulnerability, students develop the courage to be open, honest and authentic in their relationships and experiences.

Students will be introduced to some of history’s greatest. Students will learn about Madam CJ Walker, Dr. Martin Luther king, Ruby Bridges and Nelson Mandela. This lesson will educate students about the contributions of these individuals to Black history and culture, and to promote empathy and understanding of the African-American experience. Learning history from the perspective of people that look like us helps us connect with history in a more personal way. It gives us pride and inspiration. It also gives us a greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by our ancestors in their fight for the civil rights that we enjoy today.

Week 6

Black Love & Relationship Goals/Black Mental Health

This lesson will teach students about the importance of having healthy relationships within their family and friendships. They will learn about how to gauge whether a relationship is right for them, whether they are being influenced in a wrong direction and how to reciprocate the healthy love within the relationship.

This lesson will teach students about the importance of having a strong understanding from childhood can lead to a healthier, happier and more productive life in adulthood. Good mental health contributes to strong relationships and better health at home and school. It can also help to prevent the onset of other mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

Week 7

Financial Awareness/ Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

This lesson will teach students about the importance of being financially aware. They will learn about essential life skills that will equip them for life ahead. Understanding finances helps students make informed decisions about money management, budgeting, and investing. It also encourages and empowers them to be financially independent and repsonsible.

In this lesson students will learn about critical thinking and problem solving skills. This is a crucial lesson for students to develop as they navigate the complex challenges of the modern world. These skills enable students to analyze information, evaluate different perspectives and make well-informed decisions. Thinking critically helps students in various aspects of their lives, from academic pursuits to personal and professional endeavours.

Week 8

Understanding Cultural Diversity/Music & Arts

This lesson will teach students about the importance of having a strong understanding from childhood can lead to a healthier, happier and more productive life in adulthood. Good mental health contributes to strong relationships and better health at home and school. It can also help to prevent the onset of other mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

Learning about music and art from a Black cultural perspective is essential in fostering inclusivity, understanding, and appreciation of diverse cultures. It allows students to explore the rich history, traditions, and expressions of Black artists and musicians. This perspective encourages and challenges empathy, stereotypes and cultural diversity.
